Welcome to the website of Wolfgang Maiwald. Wolfgang’s musical repertoire reaches from contemporary jazz playing to modern dance music.
Recent activities include the dance project BeatsClassics, the Maiwald Hierdeis Jazz Duo, the Soul Jazz Quartet The Groove Connction, the pop/jazz/fusion quintet Originals Only and the lounge dance formation 2beatz4. Wolfgang also teaches jazz piano at DJAM, the School for Contemporary Jazz Music in Amsterdam.
Born in 1965 in Germany Wolfgang Maiwald began playing the piano at the age of fourteen as an autodidact. In 1984 he started studying music at the University of Oldenburg while already playing in local bands. He began a recording studio in 19867 and recorded his first maxi single with the funk band RED. In 1989 he won a price for best solo artist at the jazz contest “Jugend Jazzt Niedersachsen”.
Wolfgang moved to Holland in 1990 to study jazz piano at the Amsterdam School Of Arts, Hilversum Conservatory. His teachers there were Henk Elkerbout and Rob Madna. In 1995 he graduated “cum laude” for both teaching and performing. Ever-since Wolfgang has been playing performances and concerts in different styles and formations in the Netherlands and abroad. He shared the stage with famous jazz musicians like Ferdinand Povel, Cameron Brown, Bart van Lier, Rob Madna, Jesse van Ruller, Benjamin Herman, Jan Menu, Deborah Carter and others.
But Wolfgang is not only a jazz pianist. He knows his way well with electronic gear and contemporary styles. He runs his own recording studio where he has produced for various artists in the past. As a keyboard player he worked in 1996 for the Dutch theater company “Orkater” and in 1998 played the jazz musical “Larry, this funny world”. Since 1998 he accompanies the Dutch actor Eric Beekes in the music theater program for children called “Droomwolken”. Since 2002 Wolfgang performs with his jazz trio weekly at the hotel/cafe “The Old Quarter” in the center of Amsterdam. Together with Jan van Eerd he formes the lounge-dance duo 2beatz4 in 2003. He is also a steady member of the Dutch dance classics cover band “First Move”. Wolfgang teaches jazz piano at DJAM, the school for jazz and popular music in Amsterdam. Right now Wolfgang is preparing his first solo album
