“Maiwald has a romantic color palette, both in his themes and in his solos. Maiwald's music would fit perfectly in the catalogue of the ECM label. His sense of harmony is reminiscent of the pianist Lyle Mays” (Paul van den Belt, Dutch review for JazzPodium.com) read whole article (Dutch)
“An album that will appeal to a large group of music lovers. Great sounding, easily accessible music that seems to ripen after repeated listening, played by an experienced combo.” (Hans Koert, internet jazz blog "keep swinging') read whole article
“I've had the good fortune to meet and play with Wolfgang several times over the course of the last few years. He has a real voice as a composer and has managed to create an environment for his playing that serves his voice as an improviser.” (Rick Margitza, tenor saxophonist and recording artist with Miles Davis, Maynard Ferguson, Flora Purim a.o.)
"having your own sound can obviously also be done without just being square" (Hugo Pinksterboer, Dutch music magazine “Slagwerkkrant”) read whole article (Dutch)
“I was thrilled by his fine approach to the piano. There is a lot of space in his playing, which is very rare nowadays. His ensemble-playing and especially his ability to compose good melodies, also in improvisation, makes him a surprise for lovers of the Jazz piano! Hope to hear more of his music.” (Jan Huydts, jazz pianist and former director of the Jazz dept. of the Hilversum Conservatory, now Amsterdam Conservatory)
“Two faces, one handwriting: character and mood of all pieces are equally balanced.” (Sabine Fleig, Dutch jazz blog "Draai om je oren”)
"I listen to some of my favorite pianists as pianists and to others as composers. Horace Silver's piano playing, for example, while both instantly recognizable and influential, was shaped by and subservient to his compositional talents. Much the same can be said of Chick Corea or Keith Jarrett. Likewise, Wolfgang Maiwald's playing on "Two Faces" is inseparable from his finely honed compositional skills. He has written a series of pieces that are consistent in their harmonic richness and satisfying forms. His melodies and progressions always have a sense of purpose and aren't merely there as an excuse for flights of improvisation. He has a good ear for piano sonorities, writes effectively for bass, and is patient in his development of ideas, giving each the time it needs. The improvisations seem like extensions of the composed material in a way that is too often lacking in jazz groups. And this is a group! Listen to Conduction for how the trio builds together then comes back down in a way that shows how comfortable they are playing together. This is a very solid effort that merits being heard.” (Dennis Luxion, jazz pianist and composer, jazz educator at Columbia College, Chicago, performed with Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Woody Shaw, Archie Shepp, Toots Thielemans a.o.)
